Hong Kong panel advises single dose of BioNTech COVID shot for teens - (This is Money via NewsPoints Desk)

  • A committee advising the Hong Kong government recommended that children aged 12 to 17 should only be given a single dose of BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine after reports of heart inflammation, as reported Thursday in This is Money.

  • Lau Yu-lung, chair of the committee, said that the side effect was more prevalent than originally thought, adding that the experts decided that a single dose would "greatly reduce the chance of heart inflammation."

  • The panel suggested that Hong Kong's low COVID-19 risk also means that one dose should offer sufficient protection.

  • According to government data, 41 cases involving heart inflammation have been reported from people who took the BioNTech vaccine as of end-August, or just 0.0009%.

  • Among these cases, 16 involved adolescents aged 12 to 15 or 0.008% of those vaccinated in that age group.
